A year and a half ago, Glossier founder and CEO Emily Weiss was just looking for an introduction to Katrina Lake.

Now, Lake — the founder and CEO of Stitch Fix — has joined Glossier’s board of directors. With the move, Lake has become the first independent director for the startup beauty brand, joining Weiss, Glossier president Henry Davis and three venture capital investors on the company’s board.

Code Commerce is coming back to New York City, Sept. 17-18.

“I’ve just been generally so inspired by her, and so impressed by her as an operator and what an excellent job she’s done scaling Stitch Fix while staying so close to the customer,” Weiss said in an interview.

Lake founded Stitch Fix, the personal styling service, seven years ago, and took the company public in November after building a nearly $1 billion revenue business on just $42 million in venture capital. Stitch Fix is now valued at more than $2.7 billion.

In Glossier, Lake has been impressed that the brand has managed to build and maintain what she called an “authentic” relationship with its customer base even while growing rapidly, and has done so “in a very digital-first, totally new way.” It doesn’t hurt that Lake was a Glossier customer long before she and Weiss even met.

Glossier grew out of Into the Gloss, a beauty blog that Weiss created in 2010. Since then, she has raised $86 million in venture capital to help fuel a breakout beauty brand built on original storytelling, customer feedback and affordable prices — helping it attract fanatical fans in their teens and 30s alike.

In addition to Stitch Fix and Glossier, Lake also is a director on the board of GrubHub, the publicly traded online food-ordering platform. Here’s Lake’s appearance at the Code Conference in May:
